June, 2013 - Update
ARE YOU REALLY AS GOOD AS YOU APPEAR?
As you already know, in 2012/13, four
Women Moving Forward® Grads that I know of left the companies they
had been at for 20+ years and were promoted to other companies who
recruited them. Each were promoted at least 1 to 2 levels
above where they were in their old companies.
The question for them and for you is: "What talents do you have
regardless of the company you work for?"
You see, for many women, we only believe we have the talents we have
because the company structure and systems are behind us. We
don't believe we walked in with the talents we have. And,
therefore, the company environment we found ourselves in either
enhanced and encouraged these talents or the environment discouraged
or made us feel less talented.
To make matters worse, all companies seem to encourage you to
believe that without them you could not be successful. This
is always a lie!
I can only say that a company's motivation for telling you
this is not much different then when an emotionally abusive husband
tells you you can't survive without him.
CO-Dependency; a psychological condition or a relationship in which a person is controlled or manipulated by another who is affected with a pathological condition like and addiction or a psychopath. In short dependence on the needs of, or control by, another.
Women who are co-dependents are easily manipulated and will easily build their lives around the company. Co-dependency is never loyalty!! Remember that, it's NEVER loyalty! Loyalty and co-dependence are 2 separate conditions and should not be mistaken for the same thing.
So, I want to request that you start
asking yourself the question - "What talents do you
have regardless of the company you work for?"
Keep asking yourself that question until you can get a very
clear answer of what you brought to the company and what they may
have assisted you in developing.
Remember they did not give you the talents for which you were hired.
They may have helped you develop some of them but they didn't give
them to you and they didn't give you what you already had!
If you remember this distinction you will be a healthier person with
a healthier, non co-dependent relationship to your company.
Let us know what you think we want to hear your ideas about this
issue!
2013 Women's Leadership Retreat a Great Success!
14 women braved the iffy weather in the Rockies and for 3 days examined their need for "control" and all that means to their work life, personal life and health.

View from the Park Hyatt - Beaver Creek, CO
It was one of the most successful Women's Leadership Retreats we have held! The issue of control is a timely one for most women. Not being able to control your life or your work or even your calendar is common these days. This is especially timely with all the change & churn that has become common in your organizations.
When you give up the illusion that you control anything except your own reaction to something you unburden yourself from responsibility you can't possibly shoulder. You also stop beating yourself up and feeling guilty for results you were never in control of to begin with!
It is such an important topic that we will need to cover it again in 2014. There was a lot we were not able to examine and next year we will look at specifics that catch you and make you feel "out of control".
If you plan to attend in 2014 you will need to register soon as we only have 1 space left. You can register on our website: Register on our website. Let me know what you think about the topic of "Control". I'd love to hear your experiences!

Their prices will be the same prices as before 8/1/13. As of August 1, 2013, all courses led by John or Susan will be priced higher.

Graduate comments from March Newsletter:
Loved your comments. I also downloaded her book to my Kindle! I am getting more convinced than ever that part of the issue for women, in addition to what you noted below, is the scarcity mentality. A Graduate
Susan - thanks for your perspective on "Lean In." On Spring Break, I was catching up on magazines and read the piece "Time" recently did on Sheryl and ripped out the book info to add to my reading list. I was curious what you thought about it and am glad to see your comments here.
What do you think of the Marissa Mayer - Google to Yahoo? Her recent actions on returning to work one week after having her baby and removing work-from-home (telecommuting) policy for Yahoo seem odd, especially when I see articles like these about her:
http://womeninbusiness.about.com/od/womeninbusinessnew1/a/The-Tweet-Cret-Life-Of-Melissa-Mayer.htm, but, I don't know enough of the context to make a educated judgment. A Graduate
My answer to the Graduate's question re: Marissa Mayer:
As for Marissa at Yahoo, I think she saw a problem at Yahoo that needed to be addressed but like so many other CEO's (male and female) she chose the wrong solution for the issue and then made it a rule at the company! We see this so many times we no longer keep a count. The wrong solution for the wrong problem is a very common mistake!!
I'm not even sure what the problem was she was addressing. But attacking the "work from home policy" was probably not the way to approach a solution! Also it would have been helpful for her to beef up other policies that support women and families, like on site child care, before she made the announcement. That way she could have offset all the crazy press she received.
Hopefully she has some good advisors who are helping her recover from this snafu! Right now she has become the poster woman for what not to do when you become a CEO and you are a woman!
Lastly, it is interesting to see the press so all over her for her actions with the working from home policy. It was not so long ago that the same press questioned the success of such a policy!

THE LADIES WHO LUNCH

Racine Graduate Lunch Nov. 28
When I travel around the world leading workshops I always schedule a lunch for Women Moving Forward® graduates in the city I am traveling to.
Some people think this is a marketing ploy. It is not. It is a way for me to find out what the issues are for Graduates. I also get to bring the women who attend up to date on Women Moving Forward® but more importantly to discuss the trend we see in all companies that affect women and their work.
I can give some of the overall perspective I could not give in Women Moving Forward®. This is important for women to have because otherwise you think you are the only one with an issue or your company is the only company dealing with women in a particular way. These feelings make you feel isolated and alone and at fault.
The Graduate Lunches are a way for you to check out what is real or imaginary. That alone makes you feel less isolated and gives you an opportunity to see things in a new way. So join us at the next Graduate Lunch check the newsletter for the up to date lunch schedule.

2013 WOMENS' LEADERSHIP RETREAT©
FULL!!

The 2012 Retreat© Group!
One of the participants in this year's
Women's Leadership Retreat© commented on how much support was visible in the room this year for all of the women attending. That is what The Retreat© is: a place for women, at director level and above, to be so they can feel the support of other women and personally and professionally grow from that experience. No matter how successful you are there is always more to develop and grow!

Lunch together at The Retreat©
To attend in 2013, May 7-9 (make up day May 6), you must be a graduate of Women Moving Forward® for at least a year and you must also attend The Advanced Women Moving Forward® on August 7-8 (unless you have attended The Women's Leadership Retreat before). Then you will need to attend the make-up day May 6. You will have 26 concepts to master!
If you are interested in attending please contact me ASAP! We already have 8 participants in 2013 and only 4 spaces left!! I look forward to speaking with you about this incredible program!

Observing a
Workshop
Observing is attending the workshop and looking at how far you have come since taking the workshop. It also helps you to keep the learnings you got as impactful as they were when you took the workshop.
The side benefit of Observing is supporting the women attending by modeling what it is to complete the workshop. If you would like to Observe any of the community based workshops in 2011 all you need to do is contact us to make a reservation and pay the $250 fee.
Seats in each workshop are limited and are given on a first come first serve basis. You do not have to be at all three days of the workshop. You can be at one day or several or you can come for an afternoon. The schedule is up to you when you Observe. Some Graduates bring their workshop buddies with them to Observe and some bring their old notebooks!
